How to spot a fake dating profile

Guides/Updated

A fake dating profile usually has too-perfect photos, very little real detail, and a person who moves fast: they want to leave the app, they say they love you early, and sooner or later there is a reason they need money. Check their photos with a reverse image search, keep the conversation in the app, and never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you have not met.

Nine signs a profile is fake

  • Photos look like a model shoot or a stock image, and there are only one or two of them.
  • The bio is empty, generic, or does not match how they write in messages.
  • They ask to move to WhatsApp, Telegram, email or text almost right away.
  • They say strong feelings very early, before you have met or even talked properly.
  • Their job keeps them far away: overseas, on an oil rig, in the military, on a ship.
  • They always have a reason not to meet in person or show their face live.
  • Their story changes: age, city, family or job details do not line up.
  • They talk about an investment or crypto opportunity they want to share with you.
  • Sooner or later there is an emergency: a hospital bill, a customs fee, a frozen account, a plane ticket.

Check a photo in under a minute

Save or screenshot one of their photos and run it through a reverse image search such as Google Lens or TinEye. If the same face appears under a different name, on a modelling site or on a stock photo site, the profile is not who it says it is.

No match does not prove the profile is real, so keep watching for the other signs.

If someone asks you for money

Stop sending anything. A real person you have never met will not need your money, your bank details, gift card codes or a crypto transfer. Scammers often ask for small amounts first to see if you will say yes.

Report the profile in the app, block them, and keep the messages. In the US you can also report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you already sent money, call your bank or card company straight away; the sooner you call, the better the chance of stopping the payment.

How The One Dating helps

  • No bots and no fake accounts in your deck.
  • Only people you match with can message you, unless you choose to let others in.
  • Block or report anyone from their profile or your chat in two taps.
  • Your exact location is never shown; other members only see a rounded area.

Questions people ask

What is the most common sign of a dating scam?
A request for money, gift cards or crypto from someone you have not met in person. It often comes with an emergency and a feeling of urgency.
Why do scammers want to leave the dating app?
Apps can see reports, block accounts and keep evidence. On a private messaging app the scammer is out of reach of the app's safety team.
Can a verified profile still be a scam?
Verification shows the person matches their photos. It cannot show their intentions, so the money rule still applies: never send money to someone you have not met.
